Salar de Uyuni Bolivia – Viaggi e Tour Responsabili PerùEtico

From one end of Bolivia to the other: we will start from the beautiful city of Sucre, renowned for its temperate climate and architecture, before discovering Potosí with the Cerro Rico silver mine at 4,000 meters above sea level. We will then continue to the Salar de Uyuni on a 4-day journey through hot springs and geysers, the Siloli and Dalí deserts, multicolored lagoons, flamingos, Incahuasi Island, and the train cemetery. To top it off, we can’t miss La Paz with its historic center and the Valley of the Moon, alongside Tiwanacu and its massive monoliths.

A journey to discover an authentic Bolivia, featuring visits and stays with local communities and families on the Sun and Moon Islands on Lake Titicaca, Puka Puka near Sucre, and Santiago K during our Salar de Uyuni adventure. All designed to truly tread lightly into the spirit of this country, as genuine travelers.

Intercontinental flight to Santa Cruz and connecting flight to Sucre. Upon arrival, meeting at the airport with our local representative and transfer to the B&B. The afternoon will be free to rest, allowing for a gradual acclimation to the altitude. We recommend eating light meals.

After breakfast, accompanied by our guide, we will explore the city and its museums. We will visit the central market and the Casa de la Libertad, the historic site where Bolivia’s independence was signed. We will then continue to Recoleta Square to enjoy the viewpoint overlooking the historical center, and discover the ASUR museum with its rich exhibition of indigenous textiles, before concluding with a visit to the church of San Felipe Neri.

We will depart at dawn for the community of Puka Puka, located approximately 70 kilometers from Sucre. The community lies within the ancestral territory of the Yampara culture, who speak Quechua. The Yamparas are well known across Bolivia for preserving the traditional techniques and production of their exquisite native garments, which they wear with pride during local festivities. In Puka Puka, we will spend the day with a local family who will share their daily routines, culture, and way of life with us. Depending on the time of year, we will have the opportunity to learn the secrets of their traditional cuisine, handmade textile art, or local agricultural techniques. Finally, we will return to Sucre in the evening.

In the morning, we will travel via private transport to Potosí. During the 17th century, the “Villa Imperial” was one of the largest and wealthiest cities in the world, owing to the silver extracted from “Cerro Rico,” the mountain overlooking the city. We will then have a free afternoon—an ideal opportunity to visit the Casa de la Moneda Museum and dive into Potosí’s colonial history, an era marked by immense wealth as well as great hardship for the indigenous populations.

After breakfast, accompanied by our specialized local guide, we will visit one of the active mines of Cerro Rico. We will descend into the mine to gain first-hand insight into the miners’ daily work and learn about their traditional legends. In the afternoon, we will travel via private transport to Uyuni, a journey of approximately four hours.

In the morning, a 4×4 Jeep will pick you up at your hotel to begin your Salar adventure. The first stop will be on the outskirts of town to visit the “train cemetery,” a remnant of the era when Uyuni served as Bolivia’s most important railway hub. You will then take a paved road for 20 kilometers to the village of Colchani, the gateway to the Salar—the largest salt flat in the world. You will cross this vast white expanse until reaching Incahuasi Island, where you can admire its giant cacti and hike to the top for a 360-degree panoramic view of the salt flat. In the afternoon, we will continue across the Salar heading south, passing through quinoa fields along the way. Upon arrival in the village of Santiago K, we will be welcomed and hosted by a local family.

We will spend the entire day in and around Santiago K, guided by a member of our host family. After breakfast, we will help them release the llamas from their pen so they can graze on the hills. Next, we will head by Jeep to the archaeological site of Laqaya, located just a few kilometers from the village, where our local guide will share the history, myths, and legends of the area. After lunch, we will visit one of the family’s quinoa fields, where they will explain the entire production process in detail; if our stay coincides with the planting or harvesting season, we will even have the chance to actively participate in the field work. In the late afternoon, we will take a walk through the village to discover its history, traditions, and local festivities. We will spend the night at the host family’s home.

We will depart early today, resuming our journey toward the high-altitude desert. We will cross the Chiguana Salt Flat until reaching the viewpoint of the Ollagüe volcano, which remains active. Next, we will visit the high-Andean lagoons in succession: Cañapa, Hedionda, and Kollpa. We will then press on through the Siloli Desert to reach the famous Laguna Colorada, populated by thousands of pink flamingos. Finally, we will arrive at the village of Huayllajara at an altitude of 4,500 meters, where we will stay in a simple lodge with a private room and bathroom.

We will depart very early to reach the “Sol de Mañana” geysers at dawn, during their peak activity. Next, we will arrive at the Polques thermal baths, where we can take a relaxing dip in the thermal waters. Afterwards, we will head out to discover the Dalí Desert before starting the return journey to Uyuni, which takes approximately six hours. Along the way, we will make a few scenic stops, including one at the striking “Valle de las Rocas.” Finally, in the evening, we will take the overnight bus to La Paz.

Upon arrival at the La Paz bus station, we will meet our local representative for the transfer to the hotel, where a room will be available immediately upon arrival. After a few hours of rest, we will begin the city tour of La Paz accompanied by a local guide. There will be no shortage of sights: we will discover the Witches’ Market, the Church of San Francisco, Plaza Murillo, and the colonial street Calle Jaén, before heading toward the striking Valley of the Moon and enjoying a ride on the city’s modern cable cars.

We will depart from La Paz by private transport to visit the Tiwanacu archaeological site, the most important in the country and considered the oldest urban structure in South America, located about two hours from the capital. Together with our guide, we will visit its famous monoliths, the pyramid, the various structures, and the site museum. In the afternoon, we will continue our journey toward Copacabana, the main Bolivian port on Lake Titicaca.

In the morning, we will visit the Basilica de la Virgen Negra, the most visited pilgrimage church in Bolivia, the market, and “El Calvario,” a hill next to the town where offerings are made to Pachamama (Mother Earth), blending Catholic and Andean traditions. Shortly before noon, a transfer will take us in about half an hour to the port of Yampupata, where we will take a private boat to the Island of the Moon. Upon arrival, we will be welcomed by a local family at their small hostel and share a typical lunch made with local products. In the afternoon, we will take a walk across the island to visit the ruins of the striking “Temple of the Virgins of the Sun.”

The following day, before dawn (optional), we can join a local fisherman to retrieve the fishing nets set the previous evening. After breakfast, we will travel by boat to the northern side of the Island of the Sun. From there, we will take a half-hour walk to reach the ruins of Chincana, an ancient sacred site of the Inca Empire. We will then return by boat to Yampupata, where our vehicle will be waiting to drive us to El Alto airport in time to catch the direct flight to Santa Cruz.
